Calendar : Otherfilm Festival Launch

19 February 2006 5:00pm

Launch in Brisbane with Deadnotes, Terracid, Mos Eisely, Jamie Hume.

The OtherFilm Festival will be held next month from 23-26 of March in Brisbane, Australia, and to celebrate, we're having a launch event this Sunday 19th of February.

Showcasing the spontaneous, exalting the expanded, consecrating collaborations, perpetuating the participatory, loving the live, aleatory and sensual aspects of image and music...the OtherFilm Festival is dedicated to all the OTHER sorts of film that are ignored, occluded or forgotten in today's "contracted" cinema.

This Sunday's event offers a taste of what's to come at the festival with some fantastic sound and image perfomances.  Continuing the 'What Are You Doing With Your Music?' series of visual/music nights in the soon-to-be-demolished old Mormon church that houses the studio of artist Velvet Pesu, the cream of local and interstate experimental sound performers will play in this beautiful and intimate environment amidst Velvet's large scale artworks, and accompanied by projections and films.

You can expect to hear music from:

* Deadnotes
sublime and spontaneous musical miniaturism constructed on drums, guitar and trumpet by leighton craig and eugene carchesio of 'the lost domain' and the fantastic stuart busby, who has recently emerged from brisbane suburbia to produce some of the most beautiful and deceptively simple sounds heard in years.

* Terracid
michael donnelly has become king of the outback. his musicyourmindwillloveyou imprint and flagship vehicle brothers of the occult sisterhood form one mighty lsd-koala juggernaut. his new cdr "the palace carries the eggtooth as its crown" sees donnelly at his pinnacle, soaked in bongwater with guitar in hands, ranging from psyched out noise dirges to distorted acoustic scrawl and vocal incantations. terracid has no boundaries. all fans of mud-soaked fuckere, line-up behind the hash pile.

* Mos Eisely
Mos Eissley are Adam Sussman, Matt Earle and Inge Olheilm from sydney and norway. Matt and Adam have played together for years as Stasis Duo, releasing countless tapes, cds and cdrs on labels all over the world and on their own labels Document and Breakdance The Dawn. Their music veers between full spectrum minimalist barrage, rhythmic clattering, and free punk noise and is performed on an array of homemade and modified instruments. Last month Matt and Adam were featured in uk magazine 'the wire' and later in the year they will perform on ABC tv program 'set'. Check out the Breakdance The Dawn website at www.halftheory.com/bdtd. Inge Olheilm has stunned Sydney audiences over the last year with his uncompromising sonic art performed at festivals like Liquid Architecture and The Nownow. This is his first and last trip to Queensland before returning to Norway.

* plus a very special experimental poetry performance by Brisbane's unique surrealist wordsmith Jamie Hume accompanied by Sally Cambell on Violin.

Films include minimalist Fluxus works by Yoko Ono SMOKE PAINTING (1961) and SMILE (1968), Man Ray's EMAK BAKIA (1926), Joseph Cornell's CHILDREN'S JURY(1938) and beautiful abstract Super-8 works by Melbourne artist Tony Woods (2000-2005), plus a few other surprises!
