my mum made this. it is a marsupial mouse holding a brick, ala Ignatz from Krazy Kat

mother of all song contests approaches

Apparently, it's mother's day.  This may send some of you scurrying off to the phone to call your mothers.  some of us, however, were brought up to "always be good to our mother", and don't have to bother indulging in crappy hallmark sponsored sentimentality.  Of course, some of us also grew up thinking the saying "meanwhile, back at the ranch, Batman, disguised as a door, gets his knob shot off" was one of those things people said, like "a stitch in time saves nine", and think of today more as only one week until eurovision song contest 2006!  Take what you will from that.  So, in the spirit of the day, such as it is, and the wake of the recent "mothers against noise" idiocy, here's an "invisible jukebox" style piece, with my mother.  Let's face it, who cares if Jim O' Rourke can tell the difference between Bernhard Gunter albums, what does his mum think? John Zorn's mum legendarily put young Zorn under psychiatric observation because of the music... Read more

kaftan compatible rave virgin robin fox provides vertical & moral support for dubious lifestyle choices of anonymous burzum fan

Speak to the lasers bi-yatch!

As Brisbanites should by now be aware, Robin Fox will be premiering his 'smoke & lasers' show for qld audiences next thursday, (the 18th of may) in the IMA galleries, fortitude valley.  If you've never come across Robin's audio-visual work before, suffice to say that it's an exploration of sound and light at their most fundamental levels, and you must seek out his dvd "Backscatter" at your earliest convenience.  And, of course, come to his gig - it's even a freebie! (I think).  Also performing for the first time in qld ( i think?) will be melbourne sound sculptor/ installation artist/ whatever you call it Ernie Althoff.  I' not sure what Ernie will be doing on the night exactly, but I'm very fond of his recorded works and look foward to seeing him (or his machines, whatever..) in action.  To intice you further, here is a interview with Robin Fox (conducted by myself over email during the last week) in which he talks about the move from screen based... Super8's Great

J ARTS CREW :: Super8's Great
By Fiona Hogg
QLD | 11.04.2006

It's late on a Saturday morning and despite Friday night's film festivities an impressive 30 young punters of Brisbane's Other Film Festival are standing, slouching and crouching around a film-lab in the city's inner-south.

What lure could bring these northern youths forward from Saturday morning stupor?  A workshop which promises to confer the basic skills of Super8 film production and processing, that's what.  Video killed not the filmmaker star.

As the workshop goes into session, the eager participants jostle around a table bearing a handful of black gun-shaped boxes. These are the artefacts of Super8, and as our technical tour guides Sally Golding and Louise Curham take us through their anatomies and physiologies, it is rapidly apparent that the cameras are as much fetish objects to these film fanatic as they are tools of the trade.

After a... Read more

Otherfilm Newsletter April 2006

1. OFF 2006 a success

What an amazing and inspiring time we all had...Huge thanks to everyone who helped and supported us, especially to all the local, interstate and overseas artists for their performances and collaborations, and to the great audiences who attended the festival. The opening and closing nights at Griffith University, the performance/screening nights at the Globe Theatre, and the workshops in Super 8 filmmaking and Acoustic Ecology were each unique and successful in presenting the vibrant, idiosyncratic, and unique practices around experimental film.

The special guests of OFF 2006, Arthur and Corinne Cantrill, were particularly pleased with the large and enthusiastic audience who showed their appreciation & interest in the Cantrills' historic program of expanded cinema, which was performed for the first time in almost 35 years, and it was great to see so many young audience members snapping up signed copies of early editions of the seminal... c'est randomique, non?

short to mid term forecast for brisbane

Well, I was going to post some whiney crap about there being nothing on in Brisbane this weekend, but it seems I was wrong, and there's a few things of interest ( or at least of sniggery amusement factor) happening, even if I don't know how much of it I'll be able to get to....

Apparently, since it's the first friday of the month, so Miss Penelope Leisure's Humpty Bunny Barn is on at rics, promising hits from the 50's to the naughties doesn't necessarily bode for the best, but there's a flyer going round of a juggy playboy bunny with a residents style eyeball head, so you might be alright.  They're maybe launching the new Monster Zoku Onsom video too, or something like that.
Also on friday, fucking sick brutal melbourne grinders Fuck.... I'm dead are playing with some who-gives-a-fuck American or Canadian death metal band called Crytposomethingorother.  That's at her majesty's basement, but it's a $50 ticket, so her maj is just gonna have to kiss my arse... Read more

brazil cafe, K road, auckland. home of "choice' fried breakfasts & strawberry milkshakes

choice weekend in auckland, bro....

It won't just be the substandard quality of the korean food available in Brisbane that'll make you wish you were in Auckland this weekend, as many of auckland's finest experimental musicians take to the streets (well, the streeT, 'K' road, to be precise, and realistically, they will be confined to cafes, bars & galleries on the aforementioned road) for the alleluya noise festival (Details: http://www.halftheory.com/index.php?go=calendar&id=81 )  Highlights of the festival look to be performances by Sam Hamilton & Eve Gordon, whose 16mm film/ sound collaboration (seen recently at OFF in brisbane) has been going from strength to strength in the last few months, as well as sets by Tim Coster, Infinitismal (aka mhfs), Andrew Clifford,  Un Ciego & American improvising Tuba player Ben Klien.

OUTDOOR BOWERS
Pseudoarcana
A lot of EAI these days has that inner city claustrophobia, humming like a substation or clattering like a cotton mill, but there's a distinctly rustic feel to proceedings here, not only in the album title and cover art, but in Stern's field recordings, which range from squeaky gates to all manner of flying creatures, tweeting, clacking, buzzing and twittering. Along with Guerra's explorations of the upper partials of sustained bowed tones, the title track sounds like Arnold Dreyblatt on a summer holiday on... Read more

fearless leader sends props to the big man downstairs

\m/ walpurgisnacht \m/

The 1st of may is, of course, a remarkably \m/ satanic \m/ day in the calendar, far more so than the dreary halloween (why??? oh, for fuck's sake.... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walpurgisnacht ) This particular 1st of may marks the following milestones: 40 years ago today, Cheeseball robe pervert Anton LaVey decided to get his goat lovin' ass under some constitutional amendment or other and to this end founded the Church Of Satan, and 330 years ago today the Bavarian Illuminati founded was by Adam Weishaupt in order to help promote the then floundering Bavarian conspiracy theory industry.  Lots of founding things.  So if you've lost something, maybe today's your day to found it.  Lastly, 61 years ago today, Hitler killed himself, under imminent threat of the mother of all asswhuppin's from the encroaching Red Army. So, if you're an unconscionable arsehole on a truly global scale, maybe it's your day... Read more

this man has just tracked down a tv with something good on it. however, because he is a wearer of hats such as the one in the picture, he shot it. now he'll be fucked on tuesdays

tv comes good!!! ready , SET, go!!!!

If you're at all like me, your tuesday evenings are usually a glamorous blur, as various celebrities desperatly try to get one's attention & curry one's favour by plying one with various drugs with acronymous names one can't even spell in various venues across the world one have to kill you if one told you about.  For the next few weeks, however, I'll be getting my curried favours home delivered, courtesy of Brendan Walls & the ABC, as the first installment of the new series "SET" goes to air.  Most of you will hopefully remember "Subsonics", which aired on SBS  a few years back.  This is by more or less the same crew, and is more or less a follow up, but has a more determinedly Australian focus, and wil focus on live performances by Australian experimental musicians.  The show will screen on tuesday nights, at 10pm on ABC tv.

Details of the first round of shows (in three blocks....)

block 1 (may 2-16)

Review of Wrong Music show in Brighton 14/04/06

From Fasterlouder.com.au

Thanks Jason!

Kunt, Toxic Lipstick & Company F*ck @ Wrong Music, Brighton (14/04/06)

Wrong Music is an event held in Brighton from time to time featuring the bleeding edge of gabba, breakcore, noisecore, grindcore and anything else within reach.  Tonight was no exception.  But since I was in the unusual position of being able to see Three Australian Acts on the same bill, I will focus on these three only.

The first of the three acts was Company Fuck, which consisted of a tall slim lad from the Gold Coast, his laptop, two mics, a mixer and some effects.  Despite starting his set late, the growing crowd of students, punks and other arty lunatics were treated to a set of mashed up Drill n Bass...
