Otherfilm Newsletter April 2006

1. OFF 2006 a success

What an amazing and inspiring time we all had...Huge thanks to everyone who helped and supported us, especially to all the local, interstate and overseas artists for their performances and collaborations, and to the great audiences who attended the festival. The opening and closing nights at Griffith University, the performance/screening nights at the Globe Theatre, and the workshops in Super 8 filmmaking and Acoustic Ecology were each unique and successful in presenting the vibrant, idiosyncratic, and unique practices around experimental film.

The special guests of OFF 2006, Arthur and Corinne Cantrill, were particularly pleased with the large and enthusiastic audience who showed their appreciation & interest in the Cantrills' historic program of expanded cinema, which was performed for the first time in almost 35 years, and it was great to see so many young audience members snapping up signed copies of early editions of the seminal 'Cantrills Filmnotes.'

Full documentation, including short video clips of festival highlights, and a full rundown of the film programs will be up soon on http://www.otherfilm.org.

In the meantime, an selection of photos by Kiwi visitor AliaK can be found here

2. Terry Riley Film Program! (last week) (in future we will advertise screenings ahead of time!)

Legendary minimalist composer Terry Riley appeared in Brisbane in April as part of the Puls8 festival to perform his music, which fuses the formal explorations of postwar American avant-garde composition with hypnotic drones, repetition, and improvisation influenced by classical Indian music.

To celebrate the appearance of Riley, Otherfilm organised a 16mm program of classic experimental films featuring the music of Terry Riley.

thanks to all those who attended. For those who didn't, the program consisted of...

Crossroads (Bruce Connor, 1975, USA)
Music by Patrick Gleeson and Terry Riley.

Corridor (Standish Lawder, 1970, USA)
With music by Terry Riley

Matrix III (John Whitney, 1970, USA)
With music by Terry Riley

This program was put together by Joel Stern, projected by Sally Golding, and introduced by Danni Zuvela, so a true Otherfilm collaboration.

3. Otherfilm news and upcoming events

OtherFilm's Danni Zuvela will be curating a special program of films by James Clayden, Melbourne's Gothic / surrealist filmmaker whose recent experimental narratives have received considerable acclaim. James will be present to introduce his films, including feature length 1982 dream film CORPSE as well as enigmatic recent work. Stay tuned for dates and venues...

Otherfilm is preparing an exciting program for Brisbane's premier festival of art and culture, SOOB, in August this year. Expect expanded cinema performances, historic experimental screenings, guerrilla alleyway projections and more...

Tuesday evenings at 10pm on ABC television in Australia for the next fortnight is 'Set', a program dedicated to Australian experimental music. The show has been put together by artist and producer Brendan Walls and follows on from his groundbreaking 'subsonics' series of a couple of years ago. This week features 'Francis Plagne', the brilliant young avant-songsmith from Melbourne. Look out for Mark Harwood and Pia Borg performing on various electronic, acoustic and percussion devices in Francis' band. Mark and Pia, performing as 'Pride and Prejudice', presented an amazing scultpural audio-visual happening at this years Otherfilm Festival.

Brisbane International Film Festival has selected 'JACK SMITH & THE DESTRUCTION OF ATLANTIS' a documentary feature on the iconic, brilliant late American film and performance artist Jack Smith, to screen in its 2006 program. Well done BIFF! Yet another reason for our non-Brisbane based Aussie film friends to cast an envious glance up north!

Otherfilm sends a big hello to 'Daylesford Super 8' group who are based in the small Victorian town. They have been organising screenings of locally produced work for 20 years. Ringleader Richard Tuohy also offers affordable E-6 hand processing for Kodak Ektachrome 64T, something he presently does for the Daylesford group which is otherwise unavailable in Australia. If you are interested contact Richard: richtuo@iprimus.com.au.

Otherfilm wishes a fond farewell to Brisbane artist/musician/webmaster Scott Sinclair as he sets off on his European adventure and residency in Berlin. Scott is the talented individual behind the Half Theory empire (check out www.halftheory.com), and performed at OFF2006 as part of Botborg. Watch out for Scott performing throughout Europe and our European friends can get in touch: mail@halftheory.com

best wishes,
Sally Golding, Joel Stern and Danni Zuvela
