Audiopollen August 2nd 2006

hello friends and acquaintances,
audiopollen is a weekly radio program exploring experimental, avant-garde, outsider, noise and other forms of music. it broadcasts in brisbane on 4ZZZ 102.1fm on Wednesdays at 11pm and will eventually stream to the world in one way or another...

tonights edition of audiopollen is hosted by joel stern.

We start todays program with a track by Brisbane visual and sound artist Eugene Carchesio which comes from the audio CD produced for his exhibition Everything Takes Time / Time Takes Everything held at the Brisbane IMA (10 June 0 22 July 2006). The exhibition consisted of a wall painting, this soundtrack and 'the space between'. Eugene's music for the exhibition consists of beautifully intricate electro-acoustic compositions focussing almost exclusively on rhythm. This minimalistic, microsonic mode of composition overlaps perfectly with Eugene's geometric post op-art style of abstract painting.

We move... Read more

Audiopollen July 26th 2006

hello friends and acquaintances,
audiopollen is a weekly radio program exploring experimental, avant-garde, outsider, noise and other forms of music. it broadcasts in brisbane on 4ZZZ 102.1fm and will eventually stream to the world in one way or another...

We began the show with an incredible new release that has been receiving a lot of critical analysis and review. Many listeners relate the music of Scott Walker to films by Bergman and Tarkovsky rather than other music. Yes, there is something instensly cinematic and literary in his new work.

artist - track - album - label
Scott Walker - Cossacks - The Drift - 4AD

Next we moved on to an incredible piece of 'sound art' by Lebanese artist/musician Mazen Kerbaj.

Mazen is part of the small but impressive Beirut free improvisation scene and has been producing... Read more

Audiopollen 19/07/06

Catching up again.  The drought has given way to a plethora of activities in the last few weeks and those coming up - B.I.F.F. and S.O.O.B. being two acronyms worth exploring google-wise!

Ok this show was slanted very much towards individualistic takes on more conventional forms.

The show started with two tracks from Etron Fou LeLoublan (Crazy Shit, The White Wolf) a french band associated with the Rock In Opposition movement figureheaded by Chris Cutler of Henry Cow, Art Bears infamy.

Exposition Universelle and Nicole La Musique both taken from 43 songs - a 3cd compilation of all their studio material.

We then followed up with some NZ avant/noise/skronk/whatever from the City People's Farmer Music.  Sam Hamilton has something to do with this - he is both a very approachable / amicable chap and something of an all-rounder having his fingers in the more trad guitar based experimentalism as well as visual and performance... Tape and Paint Game for all the family!

Audiopollen 05/07/06

Slowly catching up on the playlists.

Audiopollen on this night featured Lloyd soloing while Joel was in Melbourne.  This night I played my entire "Mise En Scene" (room40) album just prior to the launch at the Judith Wright Centre.

Also played a track entitled "non-reflective orange hens" from the beautifully difficult Joel Stern/Jim Denley "tape and paint game"(splitcdr9).

Finally I worked the interzone between AP and Morphine and Ice Cream with Baka Tatakau "1st", an intriguing new proposition from Joe Musgrove and Daiji Igarashi.  It is completely their own thing but reference points might include Dean Roberts, Boredoms and some of the less anguished Keiji Haino material.

RIP György Ligeti (1923-2006)

In honor of the great Hungarian composer we played two of his most important pieces...

1. Gyorgy Ligeti - Lux Aeterna (1966)
2. Gyorgy Ligeti - Requiem (1963-65)

Both these pieces reached a mass audience when excerpts were used on the soundtrack recording of the Stanley Kubrick film 2001: A Space Odyssey.

and

Long Live The Lost Domain (1989ish - ongoing)

In honor of the great Brisbane free-wheeling psych-improvisation ensemble we played two of their most important pieces...
