Daryl Buckley & Michael Hewes
Daryl Buckley (born Feb 1957, Melbourne) studied politics and history at the University of Melbourne and music at the Victorian College of the Arts. In 1977 Daryl worked as a boilermaker's assistant at the Williamstown Naval Dockyards. He is currently on the board of the Australian Music Centre and is also the Artistic Director of ELISION, Australia's leading contemporary music ensemble. In this capacity, Daryl has been responsible for the development of innovative projects in the domains of contemporary opera, site-specific installation, improvisation and electronic music.
As the Artistic Director of the 22-piece ensemble ELISION, Daryl has developed a broad experience of national and international cultural infrastructure, the handling of international collaborations involving participants from several different countries, concert and recording negotiations, and a practical understanding of the need for funding diversification and inter-arts collaborations in the practise of Australian companies.
He has organised seven international tours with highlights including concert engagements at the Vienna Konzerthaus (Wien Modern 96), Musica nel nostro Tempo (Milan), Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival (UK), compact disc recording sessions for the British Broadcasting Corporation, and concerts within the seasons of Westdeutscher Rundfunk, Radio Bremen, the position of ensemble in residence for the 10th anniversary of the Festival Ars Musica of Brussels as well as tours of Norway and Denmark.
In 1997 an invitation was received and accepted by Daryl to be part of an Australian Cultural delegation to Japan in a visit jointly organised by the Japan Foundation and the Department of Foreign Affars and Trade, Australia. In 1998 Daryl also participated in the recent Danish-Australian cultural interaction through his involvement in the 'Vision is to change Vision conference', held in Denmark.
In 1999 Daryl curated a series of installation and concert projects as the music component of the Queensland Art Gallery's Third Asia-Pacific Triennial.
He has also presented solo guitar concerts and workshops in Melbourne, Sydney, Rome,Seoul and Berlin. Richard BARRETT's transmission for electric guitar and electronics was written for and premiered by Daryl at the Oh-Ton season in Oldenburg on August 31, 2000.
Michael Hewes is a sound designer and musician who lives in Melbourne and trained at Latrobe University. He has been a member of the ELISION ensemble since 1991 and has since travelled and worked extensively with the ensemble in a number of Australian and European festivals. Major projects include 'Dark Matter' at the Brisbane Powerhouse in 2001, 'Lament of Desire' for the Perth Festival in 1999 and 'transmisi' in the same year at the Tennyson Powerhouse in Brisbane. He also works extensively with saxophonist/composer Timothy O'Dwyer.
