Information

Small Black Box is held at the Institute of Modern Art - 420 Brunswick St., Fortitude Valley, Brisbane

Small Black Box is a performance and listening space dedicated to experimental music and sound art, held on the last Sunday of each month at the Institute of Modern Art in Brisbane, Australia.

Each month the Small Black Box program presents both underground and established sound artists presenting original works drawing upon the aesthetics of noise, silence, drone, glitch, instrument building, digital processing and improvisation. Artists are invited to submit performance proposals that challenge both audiences and themselves, to develop, widen and educate the appreciation of alternative approaches and cultural expression of sound and noise in Brisbane. Artists are free to concentrate on their original work and have it scheduled into the rapidly evolving year long program.

Small Black Box commenced on 27 May 2001. Since then the event has gone from strength to strength, attracting local, interstate and international artists presenting original works to appreciative audiences. With support from sponsors (Australia Council for the Arts, Institute of Modern Art, Queensland Music Festival), ticket sales and volunteers, the budget for Small Black Box is modest, an emphasis is on local artists performances as a cultural exchange of ideas with local talent.

Small Black Box serves as a continuing focal point for New Music in Brisbane.

This project has been assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia Council, its arts funding and advisory body.
