Playing Sound

CLaudi_020
3" CDR

This is a short compilation of four 5 minute long guitar tracks. The initial concept was for a collection of tracks all "using guitars but not sounding like guitars." This might have offended some of the participants, so now the revised concept is simply "guitars". Ranging from the deep glacial drift of Un Ciego, through the scratchy feedback broadcasts of Ben Spiers, and the cosmic processed fizz of CJA & Jani Hellen, to the binary "noise versus silence" melodies of Pumice.

01: Un Ciego "Your Old Friends"

02: Ben Spiers "My Guts"
Guitar & Wakie talkie. Recorded 6 April 2006, Wellington, NZ. transient@darcy.co.nz

03: CJA & Jani Hellen "Tuleen tuijottaja"
Guitars. Recorded 2007 in Finland & New Zealand.

04: Pumice "Worsted"
Small Silver Guitar. Recorded 5/1/05 VPRO Radio, Amsterdam.

REVIEWS:
The other two releases by CLaudia are compilations. 'Playing Sound' has four pieces of each five minutes of guitar music. That is to say: music that is made with guitars but do not necessarily sound like guitars. Un Ciego, Ben Spiers, CJA & Jani Hellen and Pumice do the job well. There is the wall of noise approach by Un Ciego in a deep down mood, while with Spiers the guitar still sounds like a guitar, albeit on fire with the blues. Something similar, a guitar to be recognized, is the piece by CJA and Jani Hellen, but with a lot more effects to create a semi-psychedelic mood. Pumice's guitar is highly distorted through use of some very crude computer processing. Four approaches with four times a fine result. (Vital Weekly)
