Ian Andrews - Transiterations

Ian Andrews - Transiterations

DVDR from Demux (03)

Transiterations is a series of thematically linked short video pieces by Sydney based artist Ian Andrews made between 2006 and 2008. The work is built around a number of 'recordings' of banal events found by Andrews in his daily 'transit.' Some of the pieces resemble some of Kurt Kren's early 'structuralist' films, however, with Andrews the emphasis is on sound. Andrews describes the work as more like a series of visual and aural 'field recordings.'  The recorded soundtracks are made up, for the most part, of the sounds we normally ignore in our everyday lives. These sounds are then 'musicated' by relatively simple techniques: editing, filtering, etc.. Most of the pieces have a static rather than narrative structure, which lends itself to continuous loop exhibition (for which most pieces were designed). Andrews utilises locked off shots, and all sound originates exclusively from the pro-filmic event of each piece. In addition to the 12 pieces in the Transiterations project, there are four other short pieces made between 2002 and 2006.  The approximate running time is 75 minutes.
