Track

Opened on the 20th June, this fascinating installation work will challenge prior selective representations of the Powerhouse site’s history by exploring previously undocumented local histories, cross cultural stories and mythologies of groups connected to the site.
Track is part of a three year research and collaborative development process initiated by Arterial that has engaged with the various communities, individuals and groups associated with the Powerhouse in its twin incarnations as an industrial center (1926 to 1971) and a derelict site.
Sitting behind those twin histories—more notable by its absence than its presence—is the site’s earlier history as a hunting and living place for indigenous people.
A rich tapestry of memories and stories have been collected and woven into this work from an enormous variety of people from electricity workers to performance artists.
Arterial are one of the key Brisbane arts companies working in partnership with the Powerhouse. Previous collaborations on site have included the Opening Event in May 2000 and Elektrosonic Interference with Barry Schwartz in 2001. Arterial have pioneered work that blends community cultural research and development with new technologies.
The result is always absorbing, dynamic, provocative and meticulously presented.
Track has been funded by The Australia Council—New Media Arts, Brisbane City Council, Arts Queensland and Brisbane Powerhouse.
